2018: A Year In Review

It was an incredible year filled with beautiful brides, celebrities and commercial/corporate shoots that earned us some awards and a spot in the Boston Wedding Group!

Maryelle Artistry - Boston Wedding Group

The Boston Wedding Group (BWG) is a vetted organization made up of Boston’s best wedding professionals and they chose us to be one of the three makeup artists in their group!

We’ve truly enjoyed getting to know the BWG members and networking with the best in Boston weddings.

In addition to joining this spectacular organization, we also won a couple of industry awards!

We received the 2018 Couples’ Choice Award from WeddingWire and were named Boston’s Best Makeup Artist by Boston Magazine!

The industry recognition that we’ve received this year has been unbelievable. However, we know it wouldn’t be possible without our incredible clients.

That’s why, it’s the moments we’ve shared with all of them that matter most.

KELLY: Bye Bye Redness (in Beige) by IT Cosmetics

Maryelle Artistry

Kelly’s makeup kit ALWAYS includes a container of Bye Bye Redness. Not only does it cancel out any redness (from irritation, acne, and rosacea) but it’s also great at covering up scars, age spots and so much more. They now sell this amazing cream in three different colors, but Kelly finds that the original (beige) amazingly blends into most skin tones and does the job perfectly. Kelly uses Bye Bye Redness on almost every client and says it’s one of her absolute favorite products!

Why You Should Hire A Makeup And Hair Stylist For Your Corporate Photo Shoot

Is it time to update your head shot? Well, don’t do it alone! Hire a makeup and hair stylist to polish your look and get you camera ready!

Photography Credit: Doug Levy

It all starts with your skin…

A camera will enhance the natural shine and redness that’s part of almost everyone’s skin. But, a professional makeup artist will even out your skin tone and create a matte finish. They’ll also cover any scares and/or blemishes, to keep your look natural while making it clean and consistent.

Maryelle Artistry Makeup - Before & After

A good makeup artist will then focus on your eyebrows…

If your eyebrows fade too much at the ends then the camera will make your brows look really short. To combat this, your makeup artist will work to emphasize the mid to end of your eyebrow, applying makeup that makes it look more complete.

Finally, the last facial feature that’s super important is your lips. Regardless of whether you're male or female, it’s crucial to have soft, supple and hydrated lips. So, your makeup artist will take care of that as well!

Once your face looks polished and professional, it’s time to move on to your hair. Your hair stylist’s goal is to create a lift and add life to your hair.  They’ll focus on getting rid of flyaways while keeping your overall look simple and clean.

At the end of the day, your corporate head shot should be a snapshot of the most put together version of yourself. So, hire a professional to help enhance your natural beauty!

How Is Bridal Makeup Different From A Corporate Or Commercial Look?

Bridal makeup is fun, personal and DIFFERENT.

It’s true! Everything from the way we approach the job to the makeup itself is different when working on a wedding.

Photography Credit: Sarah Der Photography

THE APPROACH

When working with a bride, all that matters is what she likes/dislikes. Some brides like a dramatic look while others don’t like much makeup at all. So, we take the time to understand each bride’s personal style and vision during her trial. We also take into consideration the cut, style and color of her dress. This helps us to ensure the makeup style flows with her entire look.

As you can imagine our approach is extremely different when working with a commercial or corporate client. Instead of talking to the talent in our chair, we go straight to the company that hired us to understand the image / message they’d like us to propel.

THE MAKEUP

The makeup we use during our commercial and/or corporate photoshoots creates a more natural look and has a flat/matt finish and texture to it.

We love working with brides and we love to give them the extra shimmer and highlight that speaks to the celebration at hand! After all, it’s one of the most important days in a bride’s life and we want to make sure she looks GREAT!

Five Steps To Wedding Day Hair & Makeup Prep

It’s your wedding day! We want you to have the most incredible morning with your closest girls. So, follow these 5 simple steps and get ready to be pampered!

1.     WASH YOUR HAIR

We recommend you shampoo the night before your wedding. But, if your hair gets frizzy overnight, then washing the morning of works well too! Make sure your hair is completely dry before your appointment.

2.     KEEP YOUR FRIZZ UNDER CONTROL

If you have curly hair and you want to keep that natural texture all day long then add in your favorite frizz control product and allow time for your hair to completely dry before your appointment.

3.     DRY YOUR HAIR

If you’re getting an updo then blow out your hair after washing or give your hair enough time to completely dry if air drying before your appointment. Your hair should only be damp if you've requested a blowout instead (blowout request done in advance)!

4.     CLEAN YOUR FACE

Wash and gently exfoliate your face and lips, pat dry and lightly moisturize with the same moisturizer you normally use!

5.     KICK BACK, RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR DAY

We are going to make you shine!

It's A Movie Star Summer For Maryelle Artistry

Comedies, dramas and documentaries… it’s been a summer full of movies for our team!

Starting with the Book Club back in May, Maryelle worked behind the scenes with Mary Steenburgen to promote the film.

We wish them all the best on their new movie and encourage everyone to go see the Book Club, Generation Wealth, The Spy Who Dumped Me and Blindspotting before the summer ends!

Makeup That Looks Great In Photos AND In Person

There’s a fine line between making someone look good in person and making them look good on film. However, a great makeup artist will be able to balance the two!

Photography Credit: Heather Soucy

Photography Credit: Heather Soucy

It all starts with the foundation! Foundation is an important product to use when appearing on film or camera. It evens out your skin tone, smooths your over all texture and covers up any flaws or blemishes that you may have.

A full application of foundation looks great in photos and film but if you’re someone who doesn’t wear makeup often then you may think it looks a bit heavy or unnatural in person. If that’s the case, then we recommend a technique called Spotting Foundation.

Spotting Foundation means you only apply makeup to the parts of your face that are discolored or blemished. Then you blend the foundation into your natural skin tone so your face looks even. This technique will leave you feeling like yourself when you look in the mirror AND it'll make you look balanced, fresh and clean when you appear on camera.

Makeup Before and After

Once the foundation is in place we’d add some soft contouring and highlighting!

The camera loves structure and without it your face will look flat behind the lens. So, we recommend some SOFT contouring and highlighting. It won’t be very noticeable in person but it will enhance your natural bone structure and make you camera ready!

Finally, it’s time for the eyes!

When it comes to your eyes we recommend keeping everything really close to your eyeline. We love using natural tones on the upper and lower lid while keeping the deeper tones in a tight line along the lash line. Then we smudge it out to create a look that will make your eyes pop on camera while remaining soft and subtle in person.

Hair, Makeup and Attire for Your Public Speaking Event

If you're speaking at an upcoming event then you must be an expert in your field.

So, now it's time to look like the master that you are! Stick with us and we'll share with you our tips for the best hair, makeup and fashion styles for your event.

HAIR

The best hairstyle for a speaking engagement is one that allows for movement as you walk back and forth during your presentation.

To make that happen, we start at your roots! While your hair is damp we apply a root boosting mousse which we evenly comb through the mid-shaft and ends of your hair.  Then we dry your hair by creating a lift at the roots and working our way down your hair shaft. Once your style is complete, we top it all off with some working spray (instead of a finishing spray). We think Kendra Platinum Working Spray works best! These steps will give your hair the bounce it needs as you walk the stage!

MAKEUP

As you walk around (and your hair is bouncing!) certain parts of your face will catch the light. So, when you’re in the makeup chair we’re going to play around with highlights and contour. This will ensure that your best features are captured by the stage lighting. It will enhance the shape and structure of your face just as it did for Shannon Woodward when we did her makeup for the Westworld Premiere Party!

ATTIRE

You want to look professional and be relatable which is why we say, “When in Rome dress as the Romans do” and Jill Marinelli, public speaker and personal stylist, agrees!

If your audience is wearing jeans then you shouldn’t be on stage in a three-piece suit. Even if you’re a banker, you’ll come off too stuffy and you won't be relatable.

However, Jill points out that there’s a fine line between being relatable and being professional. So, she recommends you dress just a little bit better than your audience while making sure your clothes are clean, steamed and tailored just right! That way, your audience knows you’re taking the presentation seriously.

In the end, you just want to look and feel your best. Because, as Jill says, “When you look good and you feel good… that’s when you do great things.”

Laughs And Lessons With The Men Behind Super Troopers 2

Talk about funny! We had the pleasure of working with Jay Chandrasekhar, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme as they prepared for the release of their new movie, Super Troopers 2

However, this group is more than just hilarious...

Super Troopers & Maryelle Artistry .jpg

They're an inspiration! They've showed us all where talent and determination can take you!

Super Troopers Group Maryelle Artistry .jpg

Back in 2001 these five men, who make up the comedy troupe called Broken Lizard, created the cult classic, Super Troopers. It was a low budget film that did well in the box office but not enough to excite any major studios.

However, the troopers knew their fans wanted more. So, after years of trying to make a sequel the men turned to the public for funding. Within 24 hours they raised 2 million dollars on a crowd funding website. In 30 days they had 4.7 million dollars and were back on the job!

Super Troopers Maryelle O'Rourke .jpg

Our team learned, laughed and were so lucky to work with this guys over a two day period from Boston to Vermont. It was so much fun that even the window washer wanted a part of the action!

So, we'd like to thank these guys for allowing us to be part of their journey and wish them all the luck in the world on their new movie!

As we get ready to cheer on our home team in Super Bowl LII, we’re taking a moment to look back and be grateful for the countless times we’ve gotten to know the New England Patriots on a more personal level.

We’ve been at Gillette Stadium to get Bob Kraft ready for interviews in the locker room…

Our artists have worked with multiple celebrities and high-profile clients. However, 2017 brought us the most impressive and inspirational person yet.

Jeff Bauman & Jake Gyllenhaal

It was a pleasure to tour with Jeff Bauman and Jake Gyllenhaal while they promoted their movie, Stronger.

As we worked on Jeff’s makeup, we saw what an incredibly kind and strong person he truly is. It was an honor to make him look and feel his best.

Jeff Bauman

In the end, THAT is our passion. We take great pride in making our clients look their best. We want everyone to feel confident in their appearance and we are grateful to continue this work throughout 2018!
